Transformation begins by releasing all that no longer serves, in order to create the space for the new. The Anassa Eneroi Casket above contains all that is being given a “kalos thanatos,” or beautiful death, as I make room for the new. Rebirth needs air to occur. As long as we are holding onto the past, hording what doesn’t do us any good, and dwelling in the realm of tight fisted control, the possibility of manifesting our truth is so restricted. Hekate, that queen of the in-between offers us keys of potential, and equally calls on us to dispose of the ones that we need to get rid of. There’s a time for locking up the past and throwing the key away. Better yet, offering that key to Hekate.
Hekate: Goddess of The Eclipse
Hekate is a Goddess of The Eclipse. Since we are currently in an eclipse season, her presence is more strongly felt in all areas. Her many epithets, from Anassa Eneroi: The Mistress of The Dead (for endings) to Triformis: The Triple Goddess (transformations) lend themselves to the eclipses. She is always connected to the moon, especially when it is dark. In my book being released later this year, I’ve included an extensive inventory of her aspects, characteristics and titles. Other suitable eclipse titles include those linked with darkness, such as Skotia (Darkness) and Nykhia (Night), and the moon, like Phosphoros (The Light Bringer).
Hekate is both the darkness and the light. The two converge in powerful ways during the eclipses. The recent Virgo lunar eclipse season marked the end of a long cycle, dating back to 2015, while the upcoming Aries new moon solar eclipse heralds the arrival of rebirth. This Sigil of Rebirth evokes the energy of transformation, containing the three-way crossroads sacred to Hekate, her torch, and keys, along with the entrance to her sacred cave. In the coven, we’ll be experiencing The Ritual of Rebirth on the Aries eclipse.
Hekate, Persephone, Demeter: Triple Goddesses of Rebirth
Hekate has many companions, especially Persephone and Demeter. The ancient ritual cycle at Eleusis included all three of them, and in mythology Hekate was Persephone’s companion to and from the underworld. In this sense, Hekate can accompany us as we journey through our own darkness to illumination.
This image from an ancient amphora, depicts Hekate acting as divine intermediary for Persephone and Demeter. Playing a similar role, Hermes stands by. During this eclipse season, Mercury (Hermes to the Romans) is retrograde, amplifying the essential energy of stillness evoked by the eclipses.
